Around 4,000 people from all over the region and many other countries participated in the Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week (LACCW) that heard calls for more ambition and stronger collaboration among all levels of government, the private sector and civil society to implement the national climate plans (known as Nationally Determined Contribution, or "NDCs") and to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.
WMO supports the regional climate weeks, which are organized every year in Africa, Latin America & Caribbean, and Asia-Pacific under the auspices of UN Climate Change and other partners and which provide a platform to mobilize climate action.
WMO organized a side event during the LACCW 19-23 August in order to promote the Integrated Global Greenhouse Gas Information System (IG3IS) and its vision for science-based information for planning and tracking emission reduction policies and actions.
The session showcased successful IG3IS related experiences from the region where atmospheric observations are enabling effective mitigation actions, including the CarboCountCity project in Recife (Brazil) and the MERCI-CO2 project in Mexico City (Mexico) and advocated participation with WMO IG3IS in advancing the use of greenhouse gas concentration measurements and analysis to help decision-makers take better-informed action to reduce emissions of GHG and pollutants that reduce air quality.
