About the speaker:

Prof. Bo Yao conducted the first in situ ozone-depleting substance (ODS) measurement in Asia and the first in situ measurement of fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-GHG) in China. He is one of the leading scientists for the JJJ Megacity Carbon Emission Project, establishing a comprehensive CO2 monitoring network in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. He developed Tianji ODS-Pro, a high-precision monitoring system for F-gas and ODS, and established the joint monitoring network for F-GHG and ODS of 9 stations in China. He has published more than 110 peer-reviewed papers.

Overview of the topic:

Halogenated greenhouse gases include ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases), both of which play an important role in ozone depletion and climate change. The atmospheric mixing ratios of halogenated greenhouse gases are extremely low, at ppt levels; monitoring them precisely is a great challenge. This talk will cover techniques for measuring ambient halogenated greenhouse gases through in-situ measurements and flask sampling, QA/QC procedures, calibration, and the recent expansion of the Chinese monitoring network through the development of a new monitoring system. Additionally, this talk will provide examples of how measurements can help quantify previously unknown or underestimated emissions and support policymakers in regulating halogenated greenhouse gases.
