IG3IS and the Atmospheric Tracer Transport Model Intercomparison Project (TRANSCOM) have come together to create a workshop dedicated to the use of atmospheric measurements to improve the quantification and understanding of greenhouse gas fluxes. This meeting will facilitate the discussion new developments, remaining bottlenecks, and how to take advantage of international cooperation and coordinated joint activities to support progress. Furthermore, it will provide an overview of various ongoing activities and the opportunity to discuss or even initiate something new.
We are additionally excited for this meeting as it will serve as the kick off for the 'cross cutting activity' portion of the IG3IS scientific implementation plan. As outlined by our first objective, IG3IS seeks to support the use of inverse modelling techniques as they can improve the national emission estimates that are reported to the UNFCCC. The cross cutting activity mentioned before, is meant to support the development of the techniques, their application to the various scales relevant for emission reporting, the definition of "good practice" approaches, and benchmarking methods, all of which can be progressed through the workshop in Lund, Sweden.
