Update from IG3IS Co-chair Dr Felix Vogel:

Earlier this year, Environment and Climate Change’s Greenhouse Gas Research Team (GHGRT) presented our latest work on urban and facility-scale methane emissions at the annual CanCH4 Symposium.

This “Methane by the Numbers” meeting brings together academic and government scientists, regulators, service providers, NGOs, and industry experts from key sectors that affect anthropogenic methane emissions, including energy, waste, and agriculture. The meeting provides a forum for discussing novel methane mitigation techniques and how to integrate atmospheric observations and inventory data to produce the best information for policymakers. ECCC’s GHGRT presented key outcomes from our IG3IS-related work on methane emissions from Canadian infrastructure. The topic ranged from deploying mobile platforms tracking emissions from major oil and gas facilities, e.g., oil refineries, surveys of city-wide emissions from natural gas distribution, satellite monitoring of upstream oil and gas regions, as well as the latest methodological improvements in our modeling tools.

Over the last few years, our Gaussian plume modeling approach has been refined to increase performance, while still remaining computationally efficient and simple enough to be deployable at a large number of sites with reasonable uncertainties, i.e., sufficient to inform policymakers and regulators: Shoma Yamanouchi "Optimization of the Gaussian Dispersion Model Inversion for Estimating Methane..."
